kyles creek house

Kyles Creek House is part of a 9 acre site, including a meandering creek, meadow/garden, and hillside. The project is unashamedly small (1,200 s.f.) and modern is its expression while simultaneously giving a nod to the local rural and agrarian shed and lean-to.

The primary design influence for this project came on the heels of my time in Australia studying bush architecture for my thesis in the summer of 2011. Those projects redefined luxury for me – it was not about expensive materials, but rather about every day materials detailed really well. It was also about blurring the lines between outside and inside, creating opportunities for both to flow and extend easily into and out from the other.

The site and the clients allowed us to really dig into these ideas and develop them into a home that embraces both their place and their lifestyle.

*Disclaimer: I designed, detailed, and oversaw much of the construction process of this project as an employee with another architectural firm. In a lot of ways this project is my baby, but I want to acknowledge that there were other wonderful people involved. And while this project manifests a lot of what Small believes in, this was not a Small Design Studio project, per se.
